U.S. coal shipments fell 18.5 percent in the first week of December from a year earlier

On Dec. 11, the Association of American Railroads said U.S. coal shipments were 72,400 tons in the first week of December, up 6.7% from the previous week but down 18.5% from a year earlier.

U.S. coal shipments fell 8.6% in the first 49 weeks of the year from a year earlier.U.S. coal shipments fell 24.2 percent in the week from a five-week average of 95,600 tons.

Four major U.S. railroads -- Union Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern and BNSF -- carried 79,700 tons of coal last week, down 17.8% from a year earlier.

In the first 49 weeks of the year, U.S. coal shipments were 4.1 million tons, down 8.4 percent from a year earlier.

Last week, BNSF's coal shipments were 34,300 tonnes, up 1.4 per cent from the previous week and down 13.3 per cent from a year earlier.Coal accounted for 17.3 percent of total shipments, the lowest in 21 weeks.

In the first 49 weeks of the year, BNSF's coal shipments fell 5.5 per cent year on year.

In the first week of December, Pacific rail carried 16,200 tonnes of coal, up 2.2 per cent from the previous week and down 27.7 per cent from a year earlier.

In the first 49 weeks of the year, rail shipments fell 14.7 per cent from a year earlier, with coal accounting for 10.3 per cent, a five-week low.

CSX transport carried 13,500 tonnes of coal last week, up 26 per cent from the previous week and the highest in 22 weeks.In the first 49 weeks of the year, shipments fell 18.3% from a year earlier.

In the first 49 weeks of the year, CSX shipped 11.2 percent of its coal, down 5.1 percent from a year earlier.

Norfolk southern shipped 15,600 tonnes of coal in the first week of December, up 12.2 per cent from the previous week but down 13.6 per cent from a year earlier.

In the first 49 weeks of the year, Norfolk southern's rail traffic fell 9.6% from a year earlier.Last week, the company's coal shipments accounted for 11.1 per cent of the total.
